The Spanish Military Hospital

When we got the call to come down to St. Augustine, we jumped at the chance. To be able to investigate one of the most haunted locations in the area and to be able to take one of their famous ghost tours? As true history buffs, there was no way we were going to miss this investigation. We left Atlanta hoping to see just a glimpse of the activity we had read about, we came back with a lot of evidence and some definite changed minds. This was one of, if not the most, active locations we have ever investigated.

Investigation Report

Date of investigation- April 23, 2005 Time of investigation- 11:00pm- 5:30am Team Members attending: Team 1- Laurie, Ben, Tim, Sue, Michele and Dion (an employee of the Old Spanish Hospital) Team 2- Kevin, Kimber, David, Ed Base- Kevin & Laurie Investigation findings- Mourning room- Both teams recorded electromagnetic activity near the foot of the bed. Upon further investigation, it appears that wiring from the breaker panel runs under the floor at the end of the bed. Slight cold spots were recorded including a drop of 4 degrees in one area of the room. No photographic evidence was captured in this room. One sensitive reported a feeling of loss and sadness. During the second teams investigation our other sensitive reported a feeling of acceptance. Surgeons Office- No electromagnetic activity was recorded in this room. One member was sitting on a bench and suddenly felt very hot. She stood up to move to another area and suddenly felt very light headed and caught herself on the table before she fell. As this was happening, the sensitive on her team reported a feeling that the man that worked in that office may have been a heavy drinker. During the second teams investigation our other sensitive reported presence of strong energy at the bench along the left side of the room. Team 2 also reported a tapping noise coming from the lobby. When they left the room to try and locate the source of the sound it appeared again in the surgeons room. They returned to the surgeons room only to have the noise reappear in the lobby. This noise was recorded on the digital recorder of the of our investigators. Ward Room- Electromagnetic activity was recorded by one team in this room. Further investigation of wiring needs to be done to explain this reading. Both teams experienced interference with their two way radios in this room. Both times, other team members from base were required to bring replacement walkie talkies down to the team. Numerous cold drafts were felt by several members of both teams, Often feeling like it was circling around to different members of the team. Three pictures of ectoplasm were captured in this room at different times but in the same area. Several orbs were captured by camera in this room also. Cold spots were felt by both teams in the area between two of the beds. One team reported smelling an odor similar to human waste between the same two beds. While in this room, there were temperature drops of up to five degrees and one member felt a sudden drop in the temperature around him, cold enough to raise goose bumps on his body. One team reported hearing tapping, ticking noises and "growls" from the Apothecary room while in this room. Apothecary Room- The senstives on both teams felt a male presence in the Apothecary Room. One had the sensation of being physically attacked by this presence. Numerous other members of the team felt a presence in the room as they would walk through it. No photographic evidence was captured in this room but the infrared video camera did capture the sound of the door going into the office being locked (No members were in the next room. One team was in the Ward room and the other team was upstairs at the time). The video camera also recorded the tapping, ticking noises and "growls" that were heard by Team 2 from the ward room. No electromagnetic activity was recorded in this room. Downstairs office- Door was found dead bolted. It had been latched by a team member as one team had retired to the upstairs area. When they went downstairs to replace one of the walkie talkies, it was found dead bolted. No team member was downstairs in the office at the time and the lock was on the inside of the door making it impossible for the investigating team to be able to lock it from the outside. The restroom door in this office closed by itself as a member of team walked out of the office. Upstairs area- This area was utilized by the team that was not investigating at the time and was the location of our base. While upstairs, both teams recorded activity. One team reported cold drafts on the stairs and near the couch. One of the sensitives sensed the presence of a little girl and later a member of the other team (who did not know what had been experienced by the other team) heard a little girl's voice. Four members witnessed the sound of footsteps and a "heavy fluid filled breathing" sound at the foot of the stairs. Two members witnessed a quick whitish light shoot across the foot of the stairs and another member captured an orb-like object on with the video setting on his camera. He also recorded the sounds of movement coming from the office area and at the foot of the stairs including what sounds to be pounding. This recording shows the investigator notifying his team members of noise downstairs as Team 2 is beginning to report over the radio that they are hearing sounds coming from the office area. Comparison of this tape and the infrared video from the Apothecary revealed that this is the time of the office door being locked. Several orbs were captured by camera on the stairs. As the investigation was ending, two of our female members were in the restroom. As they were preparing to leave the restroom, both of them witnessed the door being pushed inward, as if someone was trying to push the door open. Surgeon’s Office 12:37am Laurie feels a hot temperature at the bench on left side of the room. Surgeon’s Office 12:40am Tim hears "footsteps" outside of the room. Surgeon’s Office 12:48am Laurie and Tim both report a head pain around the left temple area while standing at the first bed. Ward Room 12:49am After leaving area of the bed both members report pain is gone. Ward Room 12:51am Team hears "floor creak" between the desk and the door to the apothecary. Ward Room 12:55am Team hears a male whisper. Ward Room 12:55am Breeze is felt going from the fireplace to the apothecary. Ward Room 12:56am Team 2: Kimber reports the presence of a child. Upstairs 12:57am Team hears a male voice. Ward Room 1:09am Michele feels a presence in the corner of the room by the crucifix. Ward Room 1:11am Michele and Laurie both encounter camera problems. Apothecary 1:11am Michele sees a black shape in front of Ben at the door into the apothecary. Apothecary 1:16am Michele’s camera dies. Apothecary 1:16am Team 2: Kimber feels a male presence. Upstairs 1:19am Temperature of rooms is recorded at 70° but team reports that the room "feels" much hotter. Apothecary 1:19am Laurie’s camera dies. Apothecary 1:20am Laurie, while sitting on the bench by the office door, reports that when she looks toward the ward she feels like something is in that room. Apothecary 1:23am Popping noise is heard coming from the ward room. Apothecary 1:24am Laurie’s camera dies. Apothecary 1:25am Team returns to the ward room. Ward Room 1:25am Team reports that temperature is 3° colder than when they left it. No A/C and No air moving. Ward Room 1:26am Cold spot is found between bed 1 and bed 2 near the foot of the beds. Ward Room 1:30am Tim and Ben report the smell of human waste at bed 1, "like a nursing home smell". Ward Room 1:31am Smell is no longer there. Ward Room 1:34am Ben gets chills by the desk in the front corner of the room, Team observes actual cold spot. Ward Room 1:34am Tim feels breeze move across him in the center of the room. Ward Room 1:34am Laurie feels breeze move across her in the center of the room. Ward Room 1:34am Michele feels breeze move across her in the center of the room. Ward Room 1:34am Ben reports that area in front of the desk now feels so hot he is sweating. Ward Room 1:37am "Michele’s meter is going nuts" in front of the desk. Ward Room 1:37am Laurie’s camera will not take a picture by doorway to lobby. Ward Room 1:37am Tim’s EMF meter is records intermittent readings by the doorway into the lobby. Ward Room 2:11am Assorted wires found under bed. Ward Room 2:13am Found that wires are not plugged in. Ward Room 2:14am Kimber reports feeling of "peace and acceptance" Ward Room 2:16am Cables appear to run from Fuse Box under the floor at the foot of the bed. Ward Room 2:19am Team enters hallway or lobby. In front of display cabinets Kimber gets a "dizzy" feeling. Lobby 2:21am Kimber in the surgeon’s office hears "tapping, like a nail tapping on something tin" from somewhere in the lobby. Surgeon’s Office 2:23am Kimber and Kevin heard noise at the front door. Surgeon’s Office 2:24am While trying to find source of the noise tapping is heard again from the surgeon’s office. Lobby 2:25am Kimber and Kevin return to surgeon’s office and tapping sound is heard again in the lobby. Surgeon’s Office 2:26am Tapping was thought to be coming from refrigerator. They check a refrigerator for source of the sound. The refrigerator was eliminated. Lobby 2:29am Team returns to surgeon’s office. Surgeon’s Office 2:31am Kimber gets strong feeling at the bench along left side of the room. She quickly backed out of room. When she returned into the room her head began hurting on both sides at temple area. Two or three feet out of room the pain was gone. Surgeon’s Office 2:38am David’s EMF meter gets a reading at the wall over the bench going into the ward room. Reading was noted to be a foot to a foot and a half above the bench. Lobby 2:39am Team heard "tick...tick...tick" noise coming from front room. They check a chain for source of the sound. The chain was eliminated. Lobby 2:42am Entire team in the ward room heard loud growl coming from the apothecary. Ward Room 2:44am Entire team heard another growl coming from the apothecary. Second growl appeared to be much louder than the first. Ward Room 2:45am Kimber gets a pain in her head from above her ears to the temple on each side of her head. She reported pain while she was in the center of the room between center bed and the fireplace. Ward Room 2:46am Team reports hearing "thunder" or something large being drug across the floor. Sound was impossible determine where it came from. Team 1: Heard the noise from upstairs but reported it sounded like it was coming from the downstairs area. Ward Room   Upstairs 2:46am David heard what sounded like "someone tapping on the door latch" on the door between apothecary and office area. Ward Room 2:47am Ed felt draft by the center bed. He left area to go to the crucifix and returned to find the draft gone. Ward Room 2:50am Team 1: Did experiment to see if a chair could make the "thunder" noise. Determined that it was possible but was not near loud or deep enough. Upstairs 2:53am Kevin report a draft by bed 3 at his feet. Ward Room 2:55am Team 1: Laurie, Tim and Michele heard movement on the stairs or down in the office area. Upstairs 2:56am Team 1: Tim heard "breathing" sound coming from bottom of stairs. Upstairs 2:56am Kimber and David in the ward room reports noise in office. "Like rustling" Ward Room 2:58am Team 1: Michele and Tim heard "raspy breathing" at the foot of the stairs. Upstairs 3:00am Kevin reports finding a cold spot between bed 1 and bed 2. Ward Room 3:01am Ward room dropping in temperature. Ward Room 3:01am Team 1: Cold spot on the stairs - 71° Upstairs 3:02am Team 1: Michele and Dion smell excrement or sewage. Upstairs 3:02am Kevin dropped his two way radio and called Base for a replacement. Kevin felt movement of cold air behind his back while kneeling at the foot of bed 3. The cold air moved around him and stopped by his left elbow. Ward Room 3:03 am Team 1: Tim and Dion, while bringing Kevin a replacement radio, find the door between the office and the apothecary has been locked. The door was dead bolted from their side. Office Area 3:03am Team 1: Tim smells sewage on the stairs. Upstairs 3:05am Team 1: Temperature on stair now back up to 76° Upstairs 3:09am Team 1: Ben hears rustling in office and foot steps on stairs. Upstairs 3:09am David, Kevin and Kimber heard "ticking" noise on the latch of door. Ward Room 3:09am David gets EMF meter reading near door to lobby. Ward Room 3:09am Kimber feels nauseous, she goes to bench just outside the lobby and ward door. Lobby 3:11am David get another EMF meter reading at bench. Lobby 3:13am Team 1: Cold spot on stairs. Tim hears "growl-ly breath" like it was "raspy or fluid filled". Upstairs 3:14am Ed reports a cold spot between beds "where Kevin felt it" Ward Room 3:15am Team 1: Michele and Ben saw a light colored movement at the foot of the stairs. Upstairs 3:15am Kevin feels breeze between bed 3 and the desk. Ward Room 3:17am Entered Apothecary Apothecary 3:19am Team 1: Michele feels presence of a male. She reports that she feels it has neither a "good or bad vibe". Upstairs 3:22am Team 1 asks Kimber to come to the bottom of the stairs. Kimber does and reports that she feels nothing unusual. Stairway 3:21am Kimber reports that the earlier presence in the apothecary is gone. One was reported by both sensitives before investigation began. Our Conclusion

There was a great deal of activity to be found in the Old Spanish Hospital the evening we were there. We captured numerous EVPs throughout the building, recorded electromagnetic activity, measured drops in temperatures and had the physical locking of a door. It is of our opinion that the Old Spanish Hospital is in fact very haunted. We have an open invitation to do another investigation at this location and we look forward to recording more evidence.
