| The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits |
 Rosemary Ellen Guiley |
ISBN: 0816040869, Paperback - BUY
From Library Journal This encyclopedia is about as fair as one can expect about a subject that many people think doesn't exist. The author ( Harper's Encyclopedia of Mystical and Paranormal Experience , LJ 8/91) has tried to read much of the skeptical literature and at least to report what it says. Yes, the believers get much more coverage, but there is an attempt to present both sides. The accuracy of the book is also fairly high. A number of errors do occur, which, surprisingly, seem not to have been copied from other sources but to have resulted from misremembering. These small errors do not significantly affect the utility of the book. A useful addition to the reference collection of any academic or public library. - Gordon Stein, Univ. of Rhode Island, Kingston Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
|
| The Encyclopedia of Vampires, Werewolves, and Other Monsters |
Rosemary Ellen Guiley, Jeanne Keyes Youngson |
ISBN: 0816046859, Paperback - BUY
From Publishers Weekly In this thorough compendium, Guiley presents tales and beliefs from all over the world and from times ranging from far in the past to the present day. The author of numerous similar reference works (The Complete Vampire Companion, etc.) and an honorary life member of the Ghost Club of London, Guiley is an expert in this field and, from this book, it seems that no appearance of the supernatural, however brief, in folklore or pop culture has escaped her notice. Vampire books, films and TV series (such as Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles, the original 1931 Dracula and the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows) receive extensive entries, and even the writers and actors are discussed at length. One can read about the "vegetable vampires" of gypsy lore (pumpkins and watermelons that go bad and begin "shaking and noisily disturbing people and animals") and about the huli jing, a Chinese fairy that "seduces victims and sucks off the victims life force during orgasm." Vampires dominate, but legends like that of the Slavic vlokolak, or werewolf, and the Shetland wulver, another type of dog-man, also appear. Guiley is deadly serious about her subject, treating legends and modern parodies of vampire movies, such as Blacula and Count Yorga, with the same academic intensity that permeates university courses on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Short citations for further reading follow many entries, and the volume is extensively cross-referenced. Members of the Vampire Empire club, founded by Jeanne Keyes Youngson, who provided the foreword for this book, or anyone else obsessed with the literally bloodthirsty will find this a fascinating reference. 102 b&w photos and illustrations. | The Encyclopedia of Angels |
 Rosemary Ellen Guiley |
ISBN: 0816050244, Paperback - BUY
From Amazon.com "What we know about angels," writes Rosemary Ellen Guiley, writer and lecturer on spirituality and human potential, "comes through our otherworldly contact with them." To bolster her claim, Guiley includes stories of some well-known recipients of angel charms--Dorothy McLean, founder of Findhorn; psychoanalyst Carl Jung; poet and visionary William Blake; and American pilot Charles Lindbergh--in this compendious volume.
Some might think of angels as our human pathway to the monotheistic God of our Western culture--a God who remains abstract and remote. All major cultures and religions, however, have intricately developed angel systems. Guiley covers all--comparing angels to analogous beings in non-western cultures in order to trace their evolution. The book is arranged alphabetically by topic, so readers can look up subjects such as angel hierarchy, individual angels, Judaic angelology, the supernatural manifestations of the Virgin Mary, and even--God forbid--sex with demons.
The Encyclopedia of Angels is thoroughly researched and pleasantly illustrated with photographs of sculpture and reproductions of some of the great medieval, Renaissance, and contemporary works of "angel" art. Believers and skeptics alike will treasure this encyclopedia of information on a luminous and mysterious subject!

| An Exorcist Tells His Story |
Gabriele Amorth, Nicoletta V. Mackenzie (Translator) |
ISBN: 0898707102, Paperback - BUY
Editorial Reviews
Book DescriptionIn this powerful book, the renowned exorcist of Rome tells of his many experiences in his ministry as an exorcist doing battle with Satan to relieve the great suffering of people in the grip of evil. The importance of the ministry to "expel demons" is clearly seen in the Gospels, from the actions of the Apostles, and from Church history. Fr. Amorth allows the reader to witness the activities of the exorcist, to experience what an exorcist sees and does. He also reveals how little modern science, psychology, and medicine can do to help those under Satan's influence, and that only the power of Christ can release them from this kind of mental, spiritual or physical suffering.
An Exorcist Tells His Story has been a European best-seller that has gone through numerous printings and editions. No other book today so thoroughly and concisely discusses the topic of exorcism.

| Cape Encounters: Contemporary Cape Cod Ghost Stories |
 Dan Gordon, Gary Joseph |
ISBN: 0974898368, Paperback - BUY
In this attractive 216 pg. trade paperback (the cover is by nationally-renowned jacket artist Wendell Minor), the authors have given voice to the many divergent--and equally passionate--points of view that surround ghosts and in the process created an intimate portrait of Cape Cod.
In their own words, forty Cape Codders describe ghosts who descend staircases that no longer exist, kiss sleeping women, flip theater seats, fold laundry, and join musicians onstage. Among those sharing their stories are the former National Environment Coordinator, a scientist from the United States Geological Survey, a retired West Point professor and a Wampanoag Native-American educator.
While seeking out only the mysterious, Gordon and Joseph instead met thoughtful individuals who related their stories with humor and insight. Their descriptions of often life-changing experiences are refreshingly frank and honest. Readers will respond to the joy, affection, humor, uncertainty, ambivalence, and other sincere emotions expressed in these accounts.
Those who have experienced America's most beloved summer travel destination will find this collection much like the Cape itself--beguiling, indelible and timeless.

This is a collection of his personal accounts as well as his associates' experiences and stories collected from credible web sites for paranormal researchers. Excellent appendixes list haunted places in North America, ghost hunters to contact, and a filmography of the best Hollywood movies in the genre. Photographs throughout enhance the appeal. One bit a woman, leaving puncture wounds all over her body. Another lifted furniture into the air, then sent objects flying in another house. These are some of the strange and sometimes terrifying cases collected by poltergeist investigator William Roll in "The Poltergeist." A parapsychologist, Roll studies these "noisy ghosts" to understand what they are and why they do what they do. In this landmark book, Roll recounts the history of poltergeists around the world, details cases in the U.S. and Europe, and takes you behind the scenes of his experiments with a poltergeist in Miami. | Unleashed : Of Poltergeists and Murder: The Curious Story of Tina Resch |
 William Roll, Valerie Storey |
ISBN: 0743482948, Paperback - BUY
One scientist's account of the poltergeist case that made headlines across the country -- and the riveting examination of a child's mysterious murder.
When she was just fourteen years old, Tina Resch became the center of the best-documented case of poltergeist activity of the twentieth century. During the spring of 1984, Tina's home in Ohio was thrown into chaos: appliances turned themselves on without electric current, objects flew through the air, furniture scooted across the floor. Censured endlessly by her adoptive family and thrust into the eye of a media twister thanks to one reporter's photographic evidence of a flying phone, Tina was propelled into a downward spiral that led to an abusive marriage, a divorce, and the birth of a child -- all before her twentieth birthday. Three years later she was charged with that child's murder, and she is currently serving a life sentence for a crime as controversial, mysterious, and complex as the accused herself -- a crime she maintains she did not commit.
Unleashed is Tina's story as told by a parapsychologist who witnessed striking paranormal phenomena in Tina's presence. Examining the destructive powers of thwarted emotions from a scientific perspective, William Roll sheds remarkable light on the case of Tina Resch -- and boldly confronts our cultural responses to events that cannot be easily explained.

| Haunted: The Incredible True Story of a Canadian Family's Experience Living in a Haunted House |
 Dorah L. Williams |
ISBN: 1550023780, Paperback - BUY
It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, had such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn't last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home's past owners had all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams' new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. Haunted is the Williams family's story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place.

Confined to the house by forces she struggles to understand, Luzette's spirit is at times a warm and welcoming presence and at others a fearsome specter. The changes to the house in which she died, the evolution of the cultural and social mores of the surrounding society, the people who live out their lives in the old house. Contains historically authentic, but possibly offensive, language.
Historic Ghost Watch Review: Essence by Glenn Woods
When I first read the quote about this book I have to admit I was dying to read it. First of all, I LOVE Savannah, GA. Secondly, it was a ghost story- enough said there, of course, I had to read it. I ordered my book and sat back and waited for my delivery. Ok, I didn't sit back and wait. I ran to the mailbox every day for 10 days dying for it to get here. The day it got here, I sat down and started reading it as soon as it was out of the package. I read it until 3am that night, took it to school with me and read it during my break and finished it the next day. Needless to say, it was hard to put down.
I don't want to give away too much because I want readers to be able to enjoy the book without me spoiling anything for them. Essence is just what it says, it's about a ghost child that wants to tell her story. While it is a fictional book, it reads like a true account. The book is totally told from the child's point of view. That was something I really enjoyed about this book. Most ghost stories are told from the point of view of the persons being haunted but this was from the ghost's point of view. This gave a really interesting perspective to the story. Instead of hearing how the living people felt about the ghost, you get the ghost's feelings about the people living in her house. Another thing I really liked about this book was her interaction with other spirits in the area. I had always wondered if spirits communicatd with each other and the sections where she is talking to other spirits are some of my favorites. When I finished Essence, I hated that it had ended. I highly reccommend reading this book- If you are in the mood for a ghost story from a different perspective, this is one you don't want to miss.

The Bell Witch Haunting Movie - BUY
Following the story of one of the world's most famous and well documented ghost stories ever, "The Bell Witch Haunting" movie is a powerful supernatural historic thriller based on terrifying actual events that took place in Tennessee from 1817 to 1821, in which a spirit tormented John Bell and his family, leaving him in a terrifying fight against the vengeful ghost to save his children and his own life. The haunting is the only known case where a spirit actually took credit for killing someone. After visiting the Bells' home, future President Andrew Jackson said, "I vow I would rather fight the entire British army single-handed than face the Bell Witch again!" The haunting started as unexplained noises around the Bell house beginning as scratching and knocking sounds and soon progressed to the sounds of dogs fighting, chains being dragged around and "beating" sounds on the outside walls of their house. It wasn't long until the children began complaining of more terrifying things--having their bed covers pulled off, being touched and pinched by a seemingly invisible force. Soon, they heard what sounded like faint, whispering voices--too weak to understand--but sounded like a feeble old woman crying or singing hymns. The encounters escalated, and the Bells' thirteen-year-old daughter, Betsy, began experiencing brutal physical encounters with the entity. It relentlessly pulled her hair, beat and slapped her, often leaving visible prints on her face and body for days at a time. Quickly, the entity's voice strengthened; it carried on intelligent conversations, and answered questions from visitors. Although the Spirit tormented many people, including the Bells' slaves, she seemed to adore Lucy Bell, John's wife. Over a four year period, hundreds of people spoke with the Spirit and witnessed its wonderful and horrifying demonstrations; and ever so many detectives, wise men, witch doctors and conjurors came to exercise their skills on the Spirit and tried to rid the Bells of their tormentor; all were brought to grief by the Spirit and left confessing the phenomena was beyond comprehension. Yet, those who witnessed the demonstrations knew that it had a wonderful power of intelligence, possessing great knowledge of men and things; a spirit that could apparently read minds, tell men's secrets, repeat sermons word for word and sing every song in the hymn book. It often assumed a pious character, enjoying religious discussions and quoting scripture with absolute accuracy.
The Spirit often expressed its dislike for "Ol' Jack Bell" and vowed to kill him. As John Bell's health grew worse, the Spirit would torture him more severely by relentlessly beating him while he was experiencing seizures. On the morning of December 20, 1820, John Bell took his last breath; and when the family found a small vial of unidentified liquid, the Spirit suddenly spoke up exclaiming, "I gave Ol' Jack a big dose of that last night, and that fixed him!" John Bell's funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Robertson County, hundreds of people attended, including the gloating Spirit, who cheerfully offered mourners a concert of brawny drinking songs. "The Bell Witch Haunting" movie is a haunted house adventure that mixes history, a frightful ghost story and a great suspense plot. This true story of terror from an unseen evil is chilling and unforgettable", said Linda, the film's producer. "What kind of being was this that was gentle to his wife, but tormented John Bell to his death? Why was it so full of contradictions; kind to some, vengeful to others; angelic at times, demonic at others?" Linda asked. "No one knows, but there seems to be a lot of evidence that something is still around today."
